WATCH THE SUN RISE
A Reliable Source
With roughly one trillion, six hundred forty-three billion, six hundred twenty-five million reps, the sunrise is one of the most predictable of occurrences. If you’re looking to learn from a reliable source, start here.
In most origin stories, nothing is set in motion until light is present.
We’re given the same formula over and over again:
Darkness + Light = Creation
Something magical happens the very moment chaos meets order, when opposites are united.
And we have an opportunity to learn from this process each and every day as we observe the threshold of a new day on the edge of what is yet to be.
Unity of Opposites
Threshold moments unite opposites. They are liminal spaces—physical, mental, emotional, relational, psychological, scientific, religious, and beyond—that orient us to a new way of being.
What was no longer is, and what will be is yet to exist.
Typically, you can tell if you’re in a threshold moment if the way you’ve done things your whole life is no longer producing the same results, a belief you’ve held no longer holds meaning, or you don’t know what to do next. Disorientation is a pillar of threshold moments, and the awareness of the threshold is key to the reorientation process.
At sunrise, the threshold of a new day, we observe the following transitions:
Darkness —> Light
Cold —> Warmth
Past —> Future
Monochrome —> Color
Asleep —> Awake
Rest —> Work
The unity of opposites can be a fun, but difficult concept to think through, and it plays an integral role in the process of becoming a man. Particularly as it relates to uniting the masculine and feminine nature. We run into the temptation to repress one side or the other when opposites meet:
Dark? Turn on a light.
Cold? Put on more clothing.
Troubled by the past? Look to the future.
Transformation happens when we stop resisting the natural flow and embrace what is. When we surrender to realities, inside and out.
The path forward is clear:
Approach your threshold.
Choose to enter the disorientation.
Reorient to something more true and more real.
Side Note: This is the formula for our Unrationed events in Wilds & The Woods. If you’re interested in approaching your threshold, finding your edge, and re-orienting to a truer version of yourself, check it out.
What We Learn From The Sunrise
Sunrises remind me of these things:
Light comes after darkness.
Light shows up in the same place.
Light awakens.
Light reorients.
Disorientation is important and necessary; not something to be avoided at all costs.
Boys avoid disorientation.
Men navigate disorientation.
As you navigate life, you’re always either
approaching a threshold (oriented)
navigating a threshold (disoriented)
leaving a threshold (reoriented)
There’s a point when the sunrise has not began.
It’s dark out, no color, and very little movement.
There’s a space where sunrise is happening.
The sky is changing. Color emerges slowly all around. Birds begin chirping and the air warms.
And there comes a point when the sunrise is over.
It’s time to get on with it and prepare for the next threshold.
